SOUTH BALI

 Highlights:

     • Kuta – Bali’s largest and most notorious beach resort,
        enjoyed by many for its nightlife, restaurant, shopping
        and busy beach scene; disliked by others for its crowds,
        commercialism and rampant development.

 • Sanur – a pleasant mid range beach resort, classier than Kuta
    and livelier than Nusa Dua, with good restaurants,
    good shopping and safe swimming. Ideal for families.

 • Shopping – Kuta and Sanur present an incredible range
    of shopping possibilities, with beach wear, ceramics, textiles,
    woodcarving and jewelery, among the offerings.

 • Jimbaran – beautiful bay where a colorful fishing fleet brings
    in fresh seafood which can be enjoyed at beachfront cafes.

 • Uluwatu temple – dramatically perched on south-western tip
    of the Bukit Peninsula, this cliff-top temple is dedicated
    to the spirits of the sea and has intricate carvings depicting
    Bali’s mythological menagerie.

 • Surfing – the biggest and best known breakers are on the Buit
    Peninsula and include Balangan, Bingin, Padang-Padang and
    Ulu Watu. Surfer’s bars, surf shops, and surf tours can all be
    found in Kuta.

UBUD

 Highlights:

     • Balinese Dancing – Ubud has numerous accomplished dance
        troupes,  which perform regularly for both tourists and locals.

 • Museum Neka – the finest collection of paintings on Bali,
    a veritable history of Balinese arts.

 • Arts, Crafts and Antiques – the galleries of Ubud and the many
    workshops in the surrounding villages offer an incredible
    assortment of things to buy.

 • Fine Dining – Ubud is the culinary capital of Bali, with
    excellent restaurants serving superb Balinese, Asian and
    International Cuisine at very moderate prices.

 • Gunung Kawi – the oldest monument on Bali, with imposing
    statues cut into the rock faces beside the picturesque
    Pakerisan River.

EAST BALI

 Highlights:

     • Scenery – superbly sculpted rice-terraces, spectacular
        volcanoes, rugged seascapes and beautiful bays;
        east Bali has some of the island’s best scenery.

 • Klungkung Royal Palace – the restored pavilions of the palace
    compound have ceiling covered with classical paintings
    depicting Bali’s most lurid legends.

 • Padangbai –a small but bustling port, with a pretty beach
    and an attractive coastline nearby.

 • Tenganan – an ancient village of Bali Aga people,
    descendants of Bali’s first inhabitants, known for
    fine textiles and basket work.

 • Diving – the wreck of the Liberty is the most popular site,
    but there are more demanding dives, with big drop-offs,
    excellent reefs and some large marine life.

WEST BALI

• Tabanan • Jembrana Coast • Negara • Belimbing Sari and Palasari

• Cekik • Bali Barat National Park • Gilimanuk

 Highlights:

     • Tanah Lot – though heavily hyped, this superbly situated
        temple is still a great sight at sunset, and one of Bali’s
        most photogenic attractions.

 • Tabanan – the district of Tabanan sees few tourists,
    but it has fine scenery, and a few out-of-the-way places
    to stay.

 • Margarana – an unusual but moving memorial to those
    who died for Bali in the struggle for Indonesian independence.

 • Pura Rambut Siwi – this excellent ‘sea temple’ has a
    magnificent location on a remote and rugged coastline.

 • Bali Barat National Park – this surprisingly large park is now
    open for short guided treks, on which you might see some
    wildlife including the rare and endangered Bali Starling.

 • Pulau Menjangan – within the national park area, the reefs
    around this island offer excellent diving.

NORTH BALI

 • Singaraja • Lovina

 Highlights:

     • Singaraja – the old Dutch capital has a few art deco
        architectural touches, tree-lined streets and un-restored
        waterfront warehouses.

 • Lovina – Low-key beach resort, popular with young
    budget travelers

 • Temples – north Bali temples are famous for elaborate stone
    carvings; look for bicycles, biplanes, buggys and Bali baroque.

 • Celukan Bawang – north Bali’s new port, where you just might
    see an old Bugis schooner.

CENTRAL MOUNTAINS

• Lake Beratan

• Bedugul

• Gunung Batukaru

 Highlights:

     • Gunung Batur – awe-inspiring landscape with a vast crater,
        crater lake, volcanic cones, solidified lava flows, and
        smoking volcanoes.

 • Trekking – climbing Batur to watch the sunrise is a very
    popular trek, and there are many other possibilities
    around the central mountains and lakes.

 • Lake Beratan – rent a canoe to paddle around this delightful
    mountain lake.

 • Munduk – west of Lake Beratan, scenic roads lead to the
    village of Munduk, with fields and blue hydrangeas,
    Dutch colonial houses and some curious art installations.

NUSA PENIDA

  • Nusa Penida • Nusa Lembongan • Nusa Ceningan

 Highlights:

     • Surfing – classy right-hand reefs breaks off
        Nusa Lembongan – for expert surfers only!

 • Diving – coral walls, caves, and big pelagics are
    found in the waters around Nusa Penida
    – for experienced divers only!

 • Exploring – rugged coastal scenery, remote villages,
    limited transport and a lack of facilities
    – for adventurous  travel only!
